June 18

Rob Russell & the Sore Losers will be bringing their patented roots-rock sound to a new venue, the Galaxy Lounge in downtown Johnson City, on Saturday, June 18th, with special guests Poker Playin’ Dogs and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Stephen Simmons.

Located at 216 E. Main St., the Galaxy Lounge is advertised as a “socially conscious” venue, and has already distinguished itself by booking a very diverse calendar of local and regional acts.

The evening of music will begin at 9 pm with Simmons, fresh off a European tour that went through Norway, the Netherlands, and ended in Paris. Simmons’ has, thus far, found greater success in Europe than the states: his US self-releases have been re-released on the Rounder Europe imprint, and his Live at Blue Highways was recorded at a Dutch music festival and released by Continental Records. Simmons’ songs are powerful, and memorable; critics make comparisons to Steve Earle, Townes Van Zant, and Jackson Browne. In addition, Simmons likes to show his rocking side, and will be joined by the Sore Losers, who will back him on three or four tunes.

Following Simmons, Poker Playin’ Dogs are led by singer-songwriter Mike Hilliard, who is probably best known to Tri-Cities music fans as a member, along with Kurt Hagardorn from Brian & the Nightmares, of the bands Mike & Ike and Floyd Eats Mayberry. Hilliard is also part of the “Butcher Covers” with The Shazam’s Hans Rottenberry and other local professional musicians, a group that performs Beatles covers. Most recently, Poker Playin’ Dogs opened for perennial Johnson City favorites Southern Culture on the Skids.

“This show will be a treat for me,” says Rob Russell, “since Mike Hilliard and Stephen Simmons are two of the best songwriters I know, and both so completely different and gifted in such unique ways.”

Rob Russell, David Hart, Josh Reifert and Andy Russell will close the show with a set featuring several new songs. “We’re going into the studio next week to start recording a new CD, and this show, at the Galaxy Lounge, will be the first time we play a couple of these songs in front of anybody,” says drummer Andy Russell. “We’ll see how it goes!”

The Galaxy Lounge is located at 216 E. Main St. in Johnson City, Tennessee. The cover charge for the show is $8; 18 and up will be admitted. Music will begin at 9 pm.
